What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain, stiffness and inflammation in the joints. It can affect people of all ages, although it becomes more common as we get older. Arthritis can develop in almost any joint, but it most commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, feet, shoulders and spine. There are many different types of arthritis, with the two most common being:

  • Osteoarthritis – caused by gradual changes to the cartilage and other structures within the joint.
  • Inflammatory arthritis – including conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, where the body's immune system attacks the joints.

Many people believe arthritis means they should stop exercising, but the opposite is often true. Regular movement and targeted exercise are among the most effective ways to reduce pain, improve joint function and maintain independence.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping people with arthritis stay active, reduce pain and maintain mobility. Following a comprehensive assessment, we'll develop a personalised rehabilitation programme based on your symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis
  • Individualised exercise programmes
  • Joint mobility exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Balance and stability training
  • Walking and gait assessment
  • Manual therapy where appropriate
  • Advice on pacing and activity management
  • Support with returning to work or sport
  • Education on managing flare-ups
  • Long-term self-management strategies

Our aim is to reduce pain, improve joint function and help you continue doing the activities that are important to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy help arthritis?

Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the recommended treatments for both osteoarthritis and many forms of inflammatory arthritis. Exercise and education have been shown to reduce pain, improve mobility and help people remain active.

Should I exercise if I have arthritis?

In most cases, yes. Regular exercise helps keep joints moving, strengthens the muscles supporting them and can reduce pain over time. We'll tailor an exercise programme to your individual needs and abilities.

Will physiotherapy cure arthritis?

Physiotherapy cannot cure arthritis, but it can significantly improve your symptoms, mobility and quality of life. Many people find they are able to reduce pain and remain active for many years with the right rehabilitation programme.

Do I need a joint replacement?

Not necessarily. Many people manage their arthritis successfully with physiotherapy, exercise, weight management and lifestyle changes. If surgery becomes appropriate, physiotherapy also plays an important role before and after joint replacement.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, rheumatologists, orthopaedic consultants, insurers and case managers.
