What are Balance Impairments?

Balance impairment is a common problem that can affect people of all ages, making everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs or turning around feel difficult or unsafe. Good balance relies on several body systems working together, including the inner ear (vestibular system), vision, muscles, joints and the brain. When one or more of these systems is affected, balance can become impaired.

Balance problems may develop following neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis, inner ear disorders including vestibular neuritis or BPPV, musculoskeletal injuries, concussion, ageing, or periods of illness and inactivity.

People with balance impairment may feel unsteady when standing or walking, experience frequent trips or falls, lose confidence leaving the house or avoid activities they once enjoyed. With specialist physiotherapy, balance can often be significantly improved, helping you move more safely and confidently.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapy aims to identify the cause of your balance difficulties and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme to improve stability, confidence and independence.

At Greenacre Physio, treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive balance assessment
  • Walking and gait retraining
  • Static and dynamic balance exercises
  • Strength and conditioning programmes
  • Vestibular rehabilitation where appropriate
  • Coordination and postural control exercises
  • Functional task-specific rehabilitation
  • Falls prevention strategies
  • Advice on mobility aids where appropriate
  • Personalised home exercise programmes

Our rehabilitation focuses on improving your ability to move safely and confidently in everyday situations, whether at home, work or in the community.

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

Balance rehabilitation is one of Greenacre Physio's specialist areas. Our clinicians have extensive experience assessing and treating people with balance impairments through specialist NHS neurological and vestibular services, as well as private practice.

We understand that poor balance is often caused by more than one factor. Our comprehensive assessments allow us to identify the underlying causes of your symptoms and develop an evidence-based rehabilitation programme tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, as well as through home visits and virtual consultations.

What to Expect

Your first appointment will include a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history and how your balance problems affect your daily life. We will assess your walking, balance, strength, coordination, vision and vestibular function where appropriate.

Following your assessment, we will explain our findings and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme designed to improve your balance, reduce your risk of falls and help you regain confidence in everyday activities. Your exercises will be progressed regularly as your balance improves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy improve my balance?

Yes. Many causes of balance impairment respond well to physiotherapy. Through targeted exercises, balance training and strength work, many people experience significant improvements in stability, confidence and mobility.

I'm afraid of falling. Can physiotherapy help?

Absolutely. Fear of falling often leads people to become less active, which can further reduce strength and balance. Physiotherapy helps improve physical ability while rebuilding confidence through safe, progressive rehabilitation.

How long does balance rehabilitation take?

This depends on the underlying cause of your symptoms. Some people improve within a few weeks, while others with more complex neurological or vestibular conditions may benefit from longer-term rehabilitation.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, neurologists, ENT consultants, rehabilitation specialists and other healthcare professionals.
