What is Bell's Palsy?

Bell's palsy is the most common cause of sudden facial paralysis, occurring when the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII)becomes inflamed, usually following a viral infection. This inflammation prevents the nerve from working normally, causing weakness or paralysis on one side of the face.

Symptoms typically develop over a few hours and may include a drooping mouth, difficulty closing one eye, reduced ability to smile, changes in facial expression, altered taste, increased sensitivity to sound and difficulty eating or drinking.

Although the majority of people make a good recovery, some continue to experience facial weakness, tightness or unwanted facial movements (known as synkinesis) that can benefit from specialist facial rehabilitation.

Early assessment and appropriate treatment can help optimise recovery and reduce the likelihood of long-term complications.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Facial physiotherapy helps retrain the facial muscles and nervous system as the facial nerve recovers. Treatment is carefully tailored to your stage of recovery, as different approaches are needed during the early and later phases of Bell's palsy.

At Greenacre Physio, treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive facial movement assessment
  • Facial muscle retraining
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Facial symmetry exercises
  • Mirror feedback training
  • Soft tissue massage and stretching
  • Synkinesis management
  • Relaxation techniques for facial tightness
  • Functional exercises for speech, eating and drinking
  • Eye care advice where appropriate
  • Personalised home exercise programmes

Our aim is to restore natural facial movement while preventing the development of abnormal movement patterns.

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

Facial rehabilitation is one of Greenacre Physio's specialist neurological services. Our clinicians have extensive experience treating Bell's palsy through specialist NHS neurological services and dedicated facial rehabilitation clinics.

We understand that Bell's palsy can affect much more than facial movement. Changes in facial expression can impact communication, confidence, work and social interactions. Using evidence-based rehabilitation, we develop personalised treatment programmes designed to maximise recovery and support you throughout every stage of rehabilitation.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, as well as through virtual consultations where appropriate.

What to Expect

During your first appointment, we will discuss when your symptoms started, your diagnosis, any medical treatment you have received and how Bell's palsy is affecting your daily life. We will assess your facial movements, resting facial symmetry, eye closure, speech and functional activities.

Following your assessment, we will explain your stage of recovery and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme. Your exercises will be progressed carefully as your facial nerve recovers, helping to restore normal movement while minimising the risk of unwanted muscle activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Bell's palsy recover?

Most people recover well, with many experiencing significant improvement within 3 to 6 months. Recovery varies from person to person, and some individuals benefit from specialist facial physiotherapy to optimise facial movement and reduce long-term complications.

Should I exercise my face straight away?

Not always. The timing and type of exercises are important. Performing inappropriate exercises too early can sometimes encourage abnormal movement patterns. A specialist assessment helps ensure you receive the right treatment at the right stage of recovery.

Can physiotherapy help if I developed Bell's palsy months or years ago?

Yes. Even if your Bell's palsy occurred months or years ago, physiotherapy can often improve facial symmetry, reduce tightness and manage synkinesis through targeted facial retraining.

Do I need medication?

Many people benefit from corticosteroids if started within the first 72 hours of symptom onset. Some people may also require antiviral medication depending on their presentation. These treatments are prescribed by your GP or hospital doctor, and early medical assessment is recommended.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, neurologists, ENT consultants, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
