What is Foot and Heel Pain?

Foot and heel pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It may develop suddenly following an injury or gradually due to overuse, changes in activity levels, poor footwear or underlying medical conditions.

The foot is a highly complex structure consisting of 26 bones, 33 joints, over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, all working together to support your body, absorb impact and allow efficient walking and running. Pain can develop in any of these structures and may affect your ability to walk, stand, exercise, work or enjoy everyday activities.

Common causes of foot and heel pain include plantar fasciopathy (plantar fasciitis), Achilles tendinopathy, arthritis, tendon injuries, stress fractures, nerve irritation and biomechanical problems. Most conditions respond well to physiotherapy, helping reduce pain, restore movement and improve long-term function.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

At Greenacre Physio, we provide a comprehensive assessment to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms before developing a personalised rehabilitation programme tailored to your lifestyle and goals.

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis
  • Manual therapy where appropriate
  • Individualised exercise programmes
  • Foot and ankle mobility exercises
  • Strengthening of the foot, ankle and calf muscles
  • Balance and proprioception training
  • Walking and gait assessment
  • Running analysis where appropriate
  • Footwear and orthotic advice
  • Activity modification and load management
  • Return to work and sport rehabilitation
  • Long-term injury prevention strategies

Our goal is to reduce pain, restore movement and help you return to the activities you enjoy with confidence.

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

At Greenacre Physio, we understand how debilitating foot and heel pain can be. Even simple tasks such as walking the dog, standing at work or climbing the stairs can become uncomfortable, while sporting activities may become impossible.

Our clinicians provide evidence-based assessment and rehabilitation, focusing on identifying the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the painful area. We develop personalised rehabilitation programmes designed to restore strength, improve movement and prevent your symptoms from returning.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, with home visits and virtual consultations also available where appropriate.

What to Expect

During your first appointment, we'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, occupation, footwear, activity levels and goals. We'll assess your foot and ankle movement, strength, flexibility, walking pattern and functional movements such as squatting, single-leg balance and calf strength.

Where appropriate, we'll also assess your knee, hip and lower back, as problems elsewhere in the body can influence foot mechanics and contribute to pain.

Following your assessment, we'll explain our findings in clear, straightforward language and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme. You'll receive practical advice and exercises from your first appointment, with treatment progressing as your symptoms improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes foot and heel pain?

Foot and heel pain can result from a variety of conditions, including plantar fasciopathy, Achilles tendinopathy, arthritis, tendon injuries, stress fractures, nerve irritation and changes in foot mechanics. A thorough assessment helps identify the underlying cause and guide the most appropriate treatment.

Can physiotherapy help plantar fasciitis?

Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for plantar fasciopathy (often called plantar fasciitis). Treatment focuses on improving flexibility, strengthening the foot and calf muscles, gradually increasing load tolerance and addressing any contributing biomechanical factors.

Will I need insoles or orthotics?

Not everyone does. Some people benefit from temporary orthotics or footwear modifications, while many recover successfully through strengthening exercises and rehabilitation. We'll advise you if additional support is likely to benefit your recovery.

Do I need a scan?

Not usually. Most foot and heel conditions can be diagnosed during a clinical assessment and improve with physiotherapy. If we believe further investigations such as an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI scan are required, we'll advise you accordingly.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, orthopaedic consultants, podiatrists, insurers, employers and case managers.
