What is Knee Pain?

Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. It can develop suddenly following an injury or gradually due to overuse, arthritis or changes in the muscles and joints surrounding the knee.

The knee is a complex joint made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and muscles that work together to provide stability and movement. Pain can originate from any of these structures and may make it difficult to walk, climb stairs, squat, run or participate in sport.

Most knee conditions respond well to physiotherapy, helping to reduce pain, restore movement and improve strength without the need for surgery.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

At Greenacre Physio, we carry out a comprehensive assessment to identify the cause of your knee pain before developing a personalised rehabilitation programme tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle and goals.

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis
  • Manual therapy where appropriate
  • Individualised exercise programmes
  • Knee mobility and flexibility exercises
  • Strengthening of the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteal and calf muscles
  • Balance and proprioception training
  • Gait and movement retraining
  • Activity modification advice
  • Return to work and sport rehabilitation
  • Long-term injury prevention strategies

Our aim is to reduce pain, restore normal movement and help you return to the activities you enjoy with confidence.

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

At Greenacre Physio, we understand how knee pain can affect every aspect of daily life, from walking the dog and climbing stairs to running, exercising and playing sport.

Our clinicians use evidence-based assessment and rehabilitation to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than simply treating the pain. Every treatment programme is tailored to your individual goals, helping you recover safely while reducing the risk of future injury.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, with home visits and virtual consultations also available where appropriate.

What to Expect

During your first appointment, we'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, occupation, hobbies and goals. We'll assess your knee movement, strength, flexibility, balance and walking pattern, as well as functional activities such as squatting, stair climbing and single-leg tasks.

Where appropriate, we'll also assess your hip, ankle and lower back, as problems in these areas can contribute to knee pain.

Following your assessment, we'll explain our findings in clear, straightforward language and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme. You'll receive practical advice and exercises from your first appointment, with treatment progressing as your symptoms improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes knee pain?

Knee pain can result from a wide range of conditions, including ligament injuries, meniscal tears, tendon problems, arthritis, kneecap (patellofemoral) pain and muscle weakness. A detailed assessment helps identify the underlying cause and guide the most appropriate treatment.

Can physiotherapy help avoid knee surgery?

Yes. Many knee conditions improve significantly with a structured physiotherapy programme. If surgery is necessary, physiotherapy also plays an important role before and after your operation to optimise your recovery.

Do I need a scan?

Not usually. Many knee conditions can be diagnosed through a clinical assessment and improve with physiotherapy. If we believe further investigations such as an X-ray or MRI scan are required, we'll advise you and liaise with your GP or consultant where appropriate.

Can I continue exercising?

In most cases, yes. Remaining active is often beneficial, although some activities may need to be temporarily modified. We'll advise you on how to exercise safely while your symptoms improve.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, consultants, insurers, employers and case managers.

Book an Appointment
