What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that can affect people of all ages. It may develop suddenly following an injury, such as a road traffic accident or sporting injury, or gradually due to posture, repetitive movements, muscle tension or age-related changes.

The neck is made up of joints, muscles, ligaments, discs and nerves that work together to support the head and allow movement. Pain can arise from any of these structures and may sometimes spread into the shoulders, upper back, arms or head.

Most neck pain improves with the right combination of education, movement and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy can help reduce pain, restore movement and prevent symptoms from returning.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

At Greenacre Physio, we take the time to understand the cause of your neck pain and how it affects your daily life. Following a thorough assessment, we'll create a personalised treatment programme to help reduce pain and restore normal function.

Treatment may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis
  • Manual therapy where appropriate
  • Individualised exercise programmes
  • Mobility and stretching exercises
  • Strengthening of the neck, shoulder and upper back muscles
  • Postural assessment and advice
  • Ergonomic advice for workstations and home working
  • Headache management where appropriate
  • Return to work and sport rehabilitation
  • Long-term self-management strategies

Our aim is to help you move more comfortably, regain confidence and return to your normal activities.

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

At Greenacre Physio, we understand that neck pain can affect your work, sleep, driving, exercise and overall quality of life. Our clinicians provide evidence-based assessment and treatment tailored to your individual symptoms and goals.

Rather than focusing solely on the site of pain, we assess how your posture, movement, strength and lifestyle may be contributing to your symptoms. This allows us to develop a personalised rehabilitation programme designed to achieve lasting improvements.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, with home visits and virtual consultations also available where appropriate.

What to Expect

During your first appointment, we'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, occupation, hobbies and goals. We'll assess your neck movement, muscle strength, posture, shoulder function and any symptoms affecting your arms or upper back.

Following your assessment, we'll explain our findings in clear, straightforward language and create a personalised rehabilitation plan. You'll receive practical advice and exercises to begin your recovery immediately, with your programme progressing as your symptoms improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a scan for neck pain?

In most cases, no. Most neck pain does not require an MRI or X-ray and improves with appropriate physiotherapy. If your assessment suggests further investigation is needed, we'll advise you and liaise with your GP or consultant where appropriate.

Should I keep moving if my neck hurts?

Yes, in most cases. Gentle movement is usually beneficial and helps prevent stiffness. We'll advise you on the most appropriate exercises and activities for your stage of recovery.

Can physiotherapy help headaches caused by neck pain?

Yes. Neck pain can sometimes contribute to cervicogenic headaches, where pain is referred from the neck into the head. Physiotherapy can often help improve neck movement and reduce these symptoms.

What if my pain travels into my arm?

Pain, tingling or numbness in the arm can sometimes occur if a nerve in the neck is irritated or compressed. We'll assess your symptoms thoroughly and tailor your treatment accordingly.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, consultants, insurers, employers and case managers.
