Returning to Driving After Injury, Illness or Concussion

Driving is an important part of maintaining independence, work and everyday life. However, following an injury, neurological condition or concussion, it is essential to ensure you are physically and cognitively ready before returning to the road.

Conditions affecting your vision, balance, coordination, reaction time, strength or concentration can all impact your ability to drive safely. Returning too soon may place both you and other road users at risk.

At Greenacre Physio, we provide specialist assessments and rehabilitation to help you regain the skills required for safe driving. We also advise on current medical guidance and, where appropriate, work alongside your GP, consultant or driving assessment services.

Your assessment may include:

  • Comprehensive neurological assessment
  • Balance and vestibular assessment
  • Vision and eye movement assessment
  • Neck mobility assessment
  • Strength, coordination and reaction time assessment
  • Functional mobility assessment
  • Fatigue and cognitive screening where appropriate

Treatment may include:

Why Choose Greenacre Physio?

At Greenacre Physio, our clinicians have extensive experience supporting people returning to driving following neurological conditions, concussion, vestibular disorders and musculoskeletal injuries.

Our Clinical Director works within specialist NHS neurological and concussion services, regularly assessing individuals whose conditions affect balance, vision, coordination and mobility. We understand the complex physical and cognitive demands of driving and provide evidence-based rehabilitation tailored to your individual needs.

Whether your goal is to return to driving after a concussion, stroke, brain injury, vestibular disorder, spinal surgery or orthopaedic injury, we'll help you understand when it is safe to return and support you throughout your rehabilitation.

Appointments are available at our Essex and Cambridge clinics, as well as through home visits and virtual consultations.

What to Expect

Your first appointment will include a detailed discussion about your medical history, current symptoms, driving requirements and personal goals. We will assess the physical and neurological abilities required for driving, including your balance, coordination, vision, neck movement, strength and reaction times.

Following your assessment, we will explain our findings and develop a personalised rehabilitation programme. Where appropriate, we will also advise on current DVLA guidance and discuss whether further assessment through a specialist driving assessment centre would be beneficial.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I drive after a concussion?

Most people should avoid driving while experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, slowed reaction times or difficulty concentrating. We can assess your recovery and advise when it is appropriate to return safely. Depending on your symptoms and occupation, additional medical advice may also be required.

Can physiotherapy tell me if I am safe to drive?

We can assess the physical and functional skills required for driving and advise whether further rehabilitation is needed. In some situations, particularly following complex neurological conditions, a specialist driving assessment may also be recommended.

Do I need to tell the DVLA?

Some medical conditions must legally be reported to the DVLA, while others do not. We can advise you on the current guidance and recommend that you discuss any reporting requirements with your GP or consultant if necessary.

Can you help after a stroke or brain injury?

Yes. We regularly support people returning to driving following stroke, traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions. Rehabilitation focuses on improving the skills required for safe driving and identifying when further assessment may be appropriate.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer directly to Greenacre Physio. We also accept referrals from GPs, consultants, insurers, case managers and occupational health providers.

If you're unsure whether you're ready to return to driving after an injury, illness or neurological condition, we're here to help. Book an appointment at one of our Essex or Cambridge clinics, arrange a home visit, or schedule a virtual consultation with one of our experienced physiotherapists.
